ZIPList5 Geocode TM (March 2015 data)
Up-to-date ZIP code database with latitude, longitude, city, state, area code, county name and FIPS code, ZIP code type, time zone, and daylight saving time information for the entire USA!
This comma-delimited ASCII data file lists every active ZIP code currently defined by the US Postal Service. Includes latitude, longitude, city name, state abbreviation, county name and county FIPS code, primary telephone area code, ZIP code type, time zone, and daylight saving time flag for each of the nearly 42,700 active 5-digit ZIP codes. Updated monthly.
You can incorporate this data into your own dealer/store locator applications to find all stores within a radius or to find the closest store. (We include the distance calculation equations.) Or use this data file with popular commercial database programs such as MS Access, dBase, Paradox, FoxPro, etc.
Included with ZIPList5 Geocode documentation is a brief tutorial explaining how to use latitude and longitude to calculate the distance in miles between two ZIP codes.
We update every record in ZIPList5 Geocode monthly, so you always receive the latest and most up-to-date data. You can't get more accurate and timely ZIP code data from any other source! We license our ZIP code data directly from the US Postal Service, and collect and cross-check all the other data continuously from a variety of sources, including the US Geological Survey, NANPA, the telephone companies, and maps.
The ZIPList5 Geocode is formatted as a comma-delimited ASCII text file, making it easy to import the data into most database programs. Also available in native MS Access, dBase, and Paradox formats.
The city name field contains the one "preferred" city name for this particular ZIP code as defined by the US Postal Service. This database contains only one record for each active ZIP code, and does NOT list any possible "alias" city names for any ZIP code.
The ZIP code field lists only valid 5-digit ZIP codes currently defined by the USPS. Obsolete ZIP codes which have been "retired" from service by the USPS are not included in this database.
The area code is the "most prevalent" area code for that one ZIP code. If multiple area codes apply to that one ZIP code, only the primary area code is listed. Overlay area codes are not listed.
The County FIPS code is a 5-digit numeric field containing a unique numeric identification assigned to that county by the US government. The County FIPS code field and the County Name field identify the "most prevalent" county for the 5-digit ZIP code listed in a given record.
The time zone field always contains the standard time zone designation for a particular ZIP code. If that ZIP code falls within a political entity which participates in Daylight Saving Time (DST) during the summer months, the DST field is set to "Y". Otherwise the DST field is set to "N".
The latitude and longitude fields contain the geographic coordinates in degrees of the "centroid" of the ZIP code area, measured north from the equator or west from the prime meridian. Depending upon the shape of the ZIP code area, the centroid may actually lie outside of the ZIP code's boundaries. Longitude for all US ZIP codes is presented as a positive number, although all values should be taken as negative (west of the prime meridian).
The ZIP Code type field identifies special ZIP codes used for PO Boxes, companies, or the military.
County, ZIP code, and area code boundaries
We have attempted to provide the most accurate information for each ZIP code by selecting the most prevalent county, area code, and time zone for each ZIP code in the database. However, you should be aware that because of this boundary alignment problem, the county name and FIPS code, area code, and time zone provided for each ZIP code in the database may not apply to every address which lies within the boundaries of that ZIP code.
