Description
This data file lists every active postal code for all of Canada. Includes city and province, as well as latitude, longitude, area code, time zone and daylight saving time. Use this data file with popular commercial database programs such as MS Access, dBase, Paradox, FoxPro, etc. Available for immediate download in native MS Access, dBase, and Paradox formats as well as comma-delimited ASCII (CSV) format. You can incorporate this data into your own dealer/store locator applications to find all stores within a radius or to find the closest store. (We include the distance calculation equations.)

We update every record in ZIPList Canada Geocode monthly, so you always receive the latest and most up-to-date data. You can't get more accurate and timely postal code data from any other source! We include the most recent area code changes in every update. Our postal code data comes directly from Canada Post Corporation. We collect and cross-check all the other data continuously from a variety of sources, including NANPA, the telephone companies, and maps.

The City Name field identifies the city associated with that postal code. There may be several different city names associated with a particular postal code. If so, the same postal code will appear in several different records, each with a different city name. You can use the Preferred? field to find the best city name to use with the postal code in this case. City names include special French characters where appropriate.

The postal code field contains only valid 6-character Canadian postal codes currently defined by Canada Post Corporation (CPC). Obsolete postal codes which have been "retired" from service by CPC are not included in this database. A particular postal code may appear in more than one record if the postal code crosses the boundary between two cities.

The Preferred? flag can have one of two states, which indicate whether or not the postal code exists in more than one city (very few do), and which of those city names is the best to use with this postal code. The two states are:

  • P - This record contains the primary city name for this postal code
  • A - This record contains an alternate city name for this postal code

The area code is the "most prevalent" area code for that one postal code. If multiple area codes apply to that one postal code, only the primary area code is listed. Overlay area codes are not listed.

The time zone field always contains the standard time zone designation for a particular postal code. If that postal code falls within a political entity which participates in daylight saving time (DST) during the summer months, the DST field is set to "Y". Otherwise the DST field is set to "N".

The latitude and longitude fields contain the geographic coordinates in degrees to four decimal places, providing a general level of accuracy of under 100 feet. For larger Canadian cities, we resolve the latitude and longitude based on the first three characters of the postal code (known as the "Forward Sortation Area", or FSA), which corresponds to the 5-digit ZIP code level in the US. The larger Canadian cities often have more than 50 FSAs. This keeps the cost of the product within reason, yet provides a level of resolution perfect for dealer locator and store locator applications.

For rural areas, in most cases, the database contains the latitude and longitude of the center of the city or town. For villages and very small towns in close proximity the database contains the latitude and longitude of the general geographic area. In general, the latitude and longitude values relate to the geographic centroid of the area, not the population centroid.

The latitude/longitude resolution of ZIPList Canada Geocode is equivalent to that of our sister product ZIPList5 Geocode. The two products can readily be combined, since they provide equivalent levels of resolution.
